Against the Grain Restaurant: A Comprehensive Review

Located at 25 Dockside Dr, Toronto, ON M5A 0B5, Canada, Against the Grain offers a diverse range of dishes in a vibrant setting. With a phone number of +1 647-344-1562, this restaurant serves both locals and visitors looking for a casual yet flavorful dining experience. While the ambiance and variety of food options are praised by many, the service and consistency of dishes are often topics of discussion.

The Atmosphere at Against the Grain

One of the highlights of dining at Against the Grain is undoubtedly its atmosphere. Situated in a picturesque location, the restaurant provides a modern yet welcoming space that sets the stage for a relaxing meal. The interior is thoughtfully designed to give guests a warm and comfortable dining environment, making it a great spot for a casual meal or a special gathering.

Many patrons appreciate the overall vibe of the restaurant, which features contemporary decor with views of the surrounding area. Whether you're dining with friends or enjoying a solo meal, the ambiance at Against the Grain creates a pleasant experience that complements the food offerings.

The Menu: A Diverse Selection

Burgers and More

When it comes to the menu, Against the Grain offers a wide variety of options ranging from classic comfort food to more refined dishes. The burger selection stands out, with various options to satisfy different tastes. Though the burger offerings are generally well-received, some customers feel that the quality may vary. A few reviewers have commented on burgers being subpar, lacking the flavor and juiciness one might expect from a high-quality establishment.

Salads and Rice Dishes

For those seeking lighter fare, the salads and rice dishes at Against the Grain provide great alternatives. The fresh ingredients and flavorful dressings used in their salads have received positive feedback from customers who enjoy healthier options. The rice dishes, too, are appreciated for their tasty combinations, making it an excellent choice for a balanced meal.

Steaks and Risottos

Steak lovers might find themselves disappointed with the preparation of the steak at Against the Grain, as a few diners have mentioned that it was overcooked and dry. This seems to be a concern for some guests, especially those who expect a more precise execution for this type of dish. Additionally, the risotto has garnered negative reviews due to its lack of flavor, with several customers noting it was too bland and needed more seasoning, including salt.

Service Experience: A Mixed Bag

While the food options at Against the Grain may vary in quality, many patrons report that the service could use improvement. Several reviews highlight the slow service as a significant downside to the dining experience. In a bustling restaurant environment, attentive and timely service is key to ensuring a smooth experience, and unfortunately, the slow pace of service has led to some dissatisfaction.

Pricing and Value for Money

In terms of pricing, Against the Grain offers a range of dishes that are reasonably priced for the quality of ingredients used. While some diners find the overall value for money acceptable, others believe the slow service and inconsistent food quality do not justify the prices. It's clear that the restaurant's potential is there, but there may be areas for improvement when it comes to delivering value.

The Verdict

Against the Grain has certainly established itself as a unique dining option in Toronto, with its appealing atmosphere and a menu filled with a variety of dishes to suit different tastes. While some elements, such as the burger selection and salads, receive praise, there are areas that need attention. Overcooked steaks, flavorless risottos, and slow service have left some guests feeling less than satisfied. However, for those looking for a comfortable and diverse dining environment with a good mix of options, Against the Grain remains a solid choice.

Great spot!! We weren’t luck to choose a good place to seat, because not every table has a cover, but it was nice. Price is ok, you pay the location, but food was awesome (salmon tartare was missing some salt). Nice choice to go with your love or some friends.

I booked for the prix fixe menu igloo dining but unfortunately all their outdoor igloos got broken during the recent winter storm, so we just had dinner indoors. To make up for it, they gave us a free cocktail drink and wine glass with our meal, which i really think was a good gesture. The food servings were generous, and one of the best winterlicious menus i’ve ever had. Our server (i forgot to ask his name, he wears glasses and was also looking after the bar area) has been very attentive and helpful which made me decide to give 5 stars instead of 4.

The place is amazing. It has a great outdoor patio in summers and a cool indoor seating in winters. The chefs special Salmon was amazing! I have tried many of the dishes on the menu from their burgers to the wrap and have never been disappointed. For the ambiance and the lake side experience combined with its proximity to Sugar beach, the price of items on the menu are very reasonable. I recommend this place for any occasion.

I had the opportunity to try their patio bubble VIP experience and it was fantastic. Everything from the ambience to the food was exquisite. The bubble kept us warm while also protecting us from the rain. It was a thunderstorm and we still didn't get wet. Their COVID steps were also so secure. I felt super comfortable being in a bubble with my bubble! As for the food I'd highly recommend the steak with fries and the mulled gold cocktail! I also really liked the desert! They tasted like the perfect cinnamon honey donut.

One of the best views you can get while enjoying a meal and/or drink. The food was great. The salmon was perfectly cooked and the sides were awesome, I'd order this meal again. The jerk chicken was incredible, not really spicy but juicy and flavourful. My only complaint is the staff are slow and seating was weird. The patio was half full but for some reason we had to wait a half hour. The waitress would just disappear and we'd have to really work to get her attention. I'd still go back, especially during warm weather.
